Starting my journey to health at 50
This journey began unexpectedly in July of last year. Before that, I was an active person, regularly attending the gym and generally feeling healthy. But one day, something felt off. I lacked my usual energy, and after a visit to the hospital, I was told that I had prediabetes.
This diagnosis was a wake-up call, not just for me but for my family as well. I had seen my mother’s long battle with diabetes, and I was determined not to follow the same path. Managing prediabetes became my mission, and I’m here to share what I’ve learned about how to take control of your health before it’s too late.
The Diagnosis: Prediabetes
When the doctor told me I had prediabetes, it felt like the world stopped for a moment. Prediabetes means that my blood sugar levels were higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. However, without intervention, it could easily turn into full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
Hearing that word—prediabetes—sent a wave of fear through me. I had watched my mother’s health deteriorate due to diabetes. She lost her mobility and struggled with her condition for years. The thought of going through the same thing terrified me. But instead of letting fear paralyze me, I decided to take control. Managing prediabetes became my focus.
What It Meant To Be Prediabetic
Prediabetes is often called the “warning stage.” It’s a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Many people don’t even know they have it until it’s too late. But prediabetes is a chance—a chance to make changes before the situation worsens.
For me, managing prediabetes meant that I had to make serious lifestyle changes. Prediabetes often comes with other issues like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which was the case for me. If I didn’t address it, I knew I would be at high risk for diabetes and other serious health problems.
Changing My Lifestyle: Diet and Physical Activity
The Best Recipe For Prediabetics
The first thing I knew I had to change was my diet. I had always loved sugary snacks, but now I had to be mindful of every bite. Managing prediabetes requires a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Foods like broccoli, spinach, and berries became regular parts of my meals. I had to cut down on processed foods and refined sugars, which was tough at first but necessary.
Exercise also played a huge role in managing prediabetes. As someone who already loved the gym, I doubled down on my physical activity. Aerobics, strength training, and walking became regular parts of my routine. Exercise helps your body use insulin more effectively, which is key in managing prediabetes.
Incorporating swimming and cardio exercises helped me not only control my blood sugar but also maintain a healthy weight—another crucial factor in preventing the progression to diabetes.
Overcoming Emotional Challenges
Managing prediabetes isn’t just about the physical aspect; it’s emotional too. The diagnosis brought back memories of my mother’s battle with diabetes. It was hard not to feel overwhelmed by the thought of what could happen if I didn’t get this under control. There were days when I felt helpless, wondering if I would ever be able to reverse the damage.
But I found strength in my family. My husband and daughter were my biggest cheerleaders. They reminded me that managing prediabetes was within my power, and with their support, I knew I could make the changes necessary to avoid the fate my mother faced.
Tools and Techniques for Managing Prediabetes
One of the most important aspects of managing prediabetes is staying informed about your health. I purchased a blood glucose monitor to track my blood sugar levels throughout the day. This helped me understand how my body reacted to different foods and activities. It gave me real-time data that I could use to make adjustments to my diet and exercise routine.
Monitoring my blood pressure was equally important. High blood pressure often accompanies prediabetes, so keeping it in check was a priority. I made sure to track my progress daily, which allowed me to see the improvements and stay motivated.
The Importance of Family Support
Managing prediabetes is not something you have to do alone. My family played a huge role in my success. My husband, who was with me every step of the way, provided encouragement and reminded me to stay focused on my health goals. My daughter, who understands nutrition and fitness, gave me invaluable advice on how to balance my meals and exercise routine.
Their support was crucial, especially on the days when I felt discouraged. Having a network of people who believe in you makes all the difference when you’re trying to make significant lifestyle changes.
Celebrating Progress and Looking Ahead
Every small victory in managing prediabetes is worth celebrating. Whether it was lowering my blood sugar levels, improving my blood pressure, or simply sticking to my new diet, I made sure to acknowledge these wins. Managing prediabetes isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress.
As I continue this journey, I remain committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I’ve learned to enjoy the foods that are good for me, and I’ve found joy in physical activity. Managing prediabetes has taught me that it’s never too late to make changes and take control of your health.
Managing Prediabetes for a Better Future
Managing prediabetes has been a life-changing journey for me. It has taught me the importance of being proactive about my health and making lasting lifestyle changes. If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes, remember that it’s not the end—it’s an opportunity to prevent further complications.
By adopting a healthier diet, staying active, and monitoring your health regularly, managing prediabetes is possible. Lean on your support system, stay informed, and celebrate every step of progress. With determination and care, you can take control of your health and live a vibrant, fulfilling life.
